Guide to visiting Martina Franca

Interest

Martina Franca is one of the most beautiful cities of Puglia, to visit surely. The historic center is intact and full of charm.
The collegiate church of San Martino is one of the masterpieces of Baroque style in Puglia, but the most interesting monument is Il Palazzo ducale is one of the few noble palaces still furnished in Puglia.

The half-day visit of Martina Franca can be combined with visits to Bari, Alberobello, Locorotondo, Monopoli, Polignano a Mare, Putignano, Ostuni, Conversano, Egnazia – Fasano, Gioia del Colle, Taranto, Oria, Grottaglie.

Half day itinerary

The meeting with the guide will take place in Piazza XX Settembre, once you pass Porta Santo Stefano we are welcomed by Piazza Roma dominated by the bulk of the Doge’s Palace. Going up to the main floor we will be greeted by the frescoes that Domenico Carella painted in the 1700s which reflect the taste and fashion of the time when Martina Franca was home to a refined noble court. We will walk along Via Vittorio Emanuele to the end where Piazza Plebiscito will open in front of us, surely among the most beautiful squares in Puglia characterized by a perspective game of scenes and semicircles and arches where the façade of the Colle di San Martino dominates over everything. After visiting the Church we will leave the large square to enter the narrow alleys of the historic center where we will be welcomed by a different beauty, all white streets, stately buildings but also peasant houses that still recall in the form of the gabled roof covered with stone i not distant trulli.

Capocollo of Martina Franca
Of ancient and noble origin, Capocollo di Martina Franca is the most important and appreciated Apulian sausage. It is similar to what in other parts of Italy is called Coppa or Lonza. It represents one of the excellences of the Apulian gastronomy.

It is possible to organize a visit to a butcher shop where this delicacy is prepared in a traditional way. Tasting is a must.
