Guide to visiting Lucera

Interest

Lucera was in the past an important city: from the Renaissance until the beginning of the nineteenth century it was the capital city of Capitanata, but despite the many historical events that have it at the center, Lucera does not preserve many historical memories of its important past . Overall, however, is worth a visit, especially if combined with neighboring Troy

Guide service

The guide service requires half a day.

The half-day visit of Lucera can be combined with the visit of Bovino, Troia, San Giovanni Rotondo, Monte Sant’Angelo, Manfredonia, Pietra Montecorvino

Half day itinerary

The first stop of our visit is the beautiful Amphitheater of Lucera, without any doubt one of the most important testimonies of the Roman era in the Land of Puglia.
Here we will meet the local guide who will be able to illustrate this great work of the Augustus era that presents itself to us in all its splendor after careful restoration. To continue our itinerary we get back on the bus and move to the other side of the city, being the Amphitheater distant from the historic center.
We reach Piazza Matteotti by bus from which a beautiful panoramic road starts, which can only be traveled on foot, at the end of which the magnificent walls of the Castle of Lucera stand out before us, inside which stood the palace-tower built by Federico II of Svevia to preserve the imperial treasury.
Back on our steps we go into the historic center: we meet the beautiful Church of San Francesco and the even more important city Cathedral: uncommon examples of Apulian Gothic, the latter arose (according to tradition) on the site previously occupied by the city’s Mosque Saracen.
