Guide to visiting Ostuni

Interest

Ostuni, the white city, is a very popular tourist destination, especially liked by foreigners, especially the British. The historic center is enchanting: it looks like a skein of white wool placed on the top of a hill, surrounded by a sea of ancient olive trees: the most beautiful in Puglia and perhaps in the world. In the summer the historic center comes alive with a lively nightlife, many are the restaurants and restaurants often carved into the rock or placed on panoramic terraces that line the white streets. Osutuni is also famous for its coast where alternating stretches of low cliff and long golden beaches. The sea of Ostuni does not fear rivals, so much to have deserved for several years the coveted recognition of the flag. It should be noted that Ostuni is not exactly on the sea, but is located on a hill and is about 8 km of beautiful countryside from the coast.

Half day itinerary

We meet the guide at the Coach parking area near Via Tenente Specchia and together we reach the historic center. The visit begins from Porta Nuova one of the ancient accesses of the city. Together we will explore the historic center which is said to consist of 5 circles of houses: the outermost inhabited by peasants, then the artisans, the nobility the clergy and at the top of the hill, almost as if the center of a target awaits us the Splendid Cathedral , artistic masterpiece in front of which opens a scenographic square like a few overlooked by the ancient seminary and the bishop’s palace joined by a choreographic bridge. We descend along Via Duomo animated by many shops that sell the typical local artisan objects and what can be considered the real gold of Puglia the extra virgin olive oil, until you reach Piazza della Libertà whose center stands the statue of Sant’Oronzo, protector of all the ancient Terra d’Otranto. If times allow it a nice walk along the walls and the countryside will take us back to our coach
