Guide to visiting Galatina

Interest

Galatina is a city that I love. I really like working in Galatina: the town is beautiful and the Basilica of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria is truly amazing. Galatina is the true heart of Salento tarantism; it is a fortune that is almost unknown, so we can enjoy it in peace.

Half day itinerary

The meeting with the guide takes place in via Raimondello Orsini near the Basilica of Santa Caterina D’Alessandria.
We will visit this splendid church whose increasing fame is due to the beautiful frescoes that adorn the interior, and which we can admire in all their splendor thanks to a recent restoration. We will then move to the adjacent cloister where another pictorial cycle awaits us. Leaving the Basilica we will walk the streets of the town among the ancient buildings built in local stone with warm colors and rich in sumptuous decorations. Galatina is perhaps the most representative country of the entire Salento where time seems to have stopped. We reach Piazza San Pietro dominated by the large façade of the Matrix Church dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul built following the dictates of the Lecce Baroque, just enough time to visit it and instead headed towards the small Chapel of San Paolo which despite its small size is to be counted among the most important places in Salento. This was the place where until the last century the ancient rite of tarantulas took place, which we will have the opportunity to talk about.
