Guide to visiting Gallipoli

Interest

Gallipoli is definitely a stop not to be missed. But missing the masterpiece or symbolic monument, the cathedral is beautiful but not exceptional, especially when compared to others.
The city is still very well and there are other small places of artistic interest, such as the Church of Purity and the beautiful noble buildings or a hypogeum mill. In addition Gallipoli the beaches are beautiful and the night life is certainly not lacking. I suggest to combine the visit of Gallipoli with a visit to the nearby Galatina: an authentic masterpiece known by few.

Half day itinerary

The guided view of Gallipoli begins and ends at the port, where it is possible to park the bus.

The port of Gallipoli deserves our attention, it is in fact the most important fishing port of Salento and among the most important in Puglia. Then we cross the banks of the ribbing fishmongers of fresh fish, seafood, octopus but above all the product of excellence and pride of the city: the famous red prawn of Gallipoli, exquisite species if eaten raw as usual. Gallipoli is almost an island joined to the mainland by a bridge, we advance through the very picturesque alleys until you reach the beautiful Cathedral of Sant’Agata, guardian of many artistic treasures including the beautiful paintings of the most important painter Giovanni Antonio Coppolla.

Before returning to the port we reach “the mainland” to admire the so called Greek fountain, but better to call it Hellenistic.
