Guide to visiting San Giovanni Rotondo

San Giovanni Rotondo is the most important place of the religious tourism in Apulia. The influx of tourists is  steady during all year, but the hospitality is often problematic mostly if you don’t know the mode of access to places of tourist interest; so I suggest you to read carefully this short guide.

Guide service

The visit of San Giovanni Rotondo requires at least half day.

Could be a good idea in the other half day to visit the nearby city of Monte Sant’Angelo because also Padre Pio himself used to say “first let’s go to Monte Sant’Angelo and then come to me”.

Half day itinerary

Great is now the fame of Padre Pio, a humble Capuchin friar born in a small town in southern Italy, Pietrelcina, and lived for most of his life in San Giovanni Rotondo, near Foggia, where he died in 1968. Beloved before only by the city community, his fame has reached every part of the world so as to get him elected Holy fury of the people during the pontificate of John Paul II, also by virtue of the fact that the Polish Pontiff was personally very devotee of Padre Pio.

During our tour we will visit together all the places linked to the memory of Padre Pio, including the great Sanctuary opened in 2004, which is guarded by the devotees and showed the body of the saint. The visit continues with the small church of 1600 where Padre Pio celebrated and confessed the faithful, and then visit the Santa Maria delle Grazie, where following a path where objects that belonged to Padre Pio and precious testimonies of his works are on display we arrive at the cell where Padre Pio lived.

Bus Parking

In San Giovanni Rotondo you have to pay a € 50.00 checkpoint for the large coaches and € 30.00 for minibus.

The checkpoint it is including bus parking.

The checkpoint must be paid by all coaches: whether  the group sleeps in San Giovanni, or if it is just a daily excursion .

Tourist coaches can not enter the city because the whole city is ZTL (restricted traffic zone).

. It’s possible to have the permission to load and unload luggages. For further information I suggest ask for clarification at the hotel where you have booked.

For one day trip, (so no overnight staing in the city) you have to pay the checkpoint, leave the bus at the  parking lot and reach the Sanctuary and other places of interest using a shuttle that cost of 1,00 € each way (so € 2.00 total)

There are pay toilets in the bus parking lots, but better use the free washing room in the Sanctuary. In case of emergency you can use the hospital ones.
