Guide to visiting Altamura

Interest

Altamura is nicknamed the Lioness of Puglia for its indomitable character and the strong city pride shown by the Altamurans over the centuries. Physically, the historic center revolves around the beautiful Cathedral, while the city’s economy revolves around the famous Altamura bread; during our visit we will have a “taste” of both. In reality, the whole agro-food sector is highly developed, the Altamura (also called capetoste) are very proud not only of the baked goods such as focaccia and taralli, but also of oil, wine but above all the quality of the meats. From a tourist point of view, the city is certainly interesting given the short distance from Matera with which the visit is often combined: Matera morning, and afternoon Altamura.
The famous Altamura Man may also be of interest in the city: the Neanderthal Man skeleton found in the 1990s.
Finally, it should be noted that the roads that connect Altamura with Ruvo, Coranto and Castel del Monte are among the most beautiful landscapes in all of Puglia.

Half day itinerary

We meet the guide who will accompany us along our itinerary at Piazza Zanardelli, the juncture point between the modern part of the city and the historic center that we are going to visit. Along Corso Federico di Svevia we reach the Cathedral dedicated to the Assumption, a symbol of the city. We will be able to admire both the exteriors and the important internal decorative system. Leaving the Cathedral we will enter the historic center characterized by the so-called claustri or closed streets that open onto small courtyards. We will visit the church of San Nicola dei Greci and then reach Porta Baresana. It is impossible to visit Altamura without spending time on its most important product, the famous Altamura bread. We will then stop in the oven to discover all its qualities.
