Half day itinerary

Otranto, is a city full of history, former head of the territory today said Salento but once called Terra d’Otranto. The city (nice and well kept), has retained many traces of its glorious past. Today Otranto is one of the main tourist destinations of Puglia. The view starts from an ancient and imposing gate called Porta d’Oriente almost a symbol in this city considered itself being Otranto the easternmost tip of Italy. Here came Byzantine merchants, from here you went to reach the Holy Land, the land of encounters and clashes, safe haven in the shadow of the great walls which we follow until you reach the castle so suggestive as to inspire the English writer Horace Walpole drafting in 1764 the castle of Otranto, the first Gothic novel in world literature. We continue towards the church of San Pietro, a rare example of a perfectly preserved Byzantine church, and through the city center we arrive at the Cathedral to admire the fantastic mosaic that covers the floor: it is a work of great artistic and religious value, an authentic compendium knowing the sacred and the profane medieval. Very suggestive also the Chapel of the Martyrs of Otranto an eternal reminder of the brave Otrantini who lost their lives during the conquest of the city by the Ottoman armies in 1480. The tour ends with a visit of the Crypt.
