Guide to visiting Monte Sant’Angelo

Interest

The visit of Monte Sant’Angelo is almost always combined with that of nearby San Giovanni Rotondo. Padre Pio himself advised to visit Monte Sant’Angelo first. In fact for centuries San Giovanni Rotondo was only a stopping point for those who went to Monte, today instead San Giovanni Rotondo is the main destination. In my opinion, Monte Sant’Angelo is much nicer: the Shrine of the Archangel Michael is a truly evocative place of great spirituality. According to tradition, it is the terrestrial residence of the Archangel Michael, whose presence can be perceived. It is also an artistic masterpiece. Coming to Puglia you can not not visit it.

Half day itinerary

We will meet the guide at the bus parking, not far from the places of tourist interest. We will reach the imposing castle surrounded by a mighty moat and located at the highest point of the city and from which we will enjoy a splendid view of the Gargano. We will walk along the picturesque Via Castello which is overlooked by a thousand shops where local products are displayed, including the typical waiter repeats and the giant loaves of the Monte Sant’Angelo bread type. A few more steps and here is the Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo built to protect the Grotto where according to tradition in the fifth century the Archangel Michael appeared. “I will be a watchful guardian of this cave, the sins of men will be forgiven in it” this is the promise of St. Michael the Archangel who has been pushing men for more than a thousand years to come here on pilgrimage. We will also be able to admire the extraordinary pieces of art that have embellished the Sanctuary over the centuries: among all, the exceptional bronze portal that adorns the entrance to the Sanctuary deserves special mention. A few steps and here we are at another extraordinary artistic complex: Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, alongside which stands the baptistery of San Giovanni in Tumba, also known (erroneously) as Tomba di Rotari. Our visit to Monte Sant’Angelo will continue with the suggestive Junno district that descends from the Sanctuary towards the Gulf of Manfredonia which we can admire from above.
